Friendswood carries an 8-0 record to Angleton on Friday, Oct. 23, for a 7 p.m. kickoff that will end one team's perfect season.
The Mustangs and Wildcats are the last two unbeaten squads in District 11-5A-I. Angleton is 7-0 overall and 5-0 in district play. Friendswood is 6-0 in district. The winner takes sole possession of first place heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
Both teams have dominated most of their district opponents. The one shared measuring stick is Iowa Colony. Friendswood survived a 48-42 shootout against the Pioneers on Oct. 2. Angleton ground out a 34-24 win over the same Iowa Colony squad a week earlier, according to the Galveston County Daily News.
Friendswood head coach Jordan Johnson has his team at 8-0 for the first time since 2010. That squad finished 13-2, falling to eventual state champion Lake Travis in the Class 4A-DI state semifinals.
After the Iowa Colony win, Johnson told the Galveston County Daily News on Oct. 2 that his players had earned the start. "We can't pick the order of our schedule, but we can pick how we play, and I thought our guys picked physicality and to play 48 minutes tonight and be resilient," Johnson said.
Senior quarterback Josh Brister leads the offense. In the Mustangs' 30-0 shutout of Katy Freeman on Friday, Oct. 16, Brister completed 18 of 28 passes for 263 yards and four touchdowns. He threw his first interception of the season on the opening drive, then answered with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Owens on his very next throw. Owens finished with 122 yards on four catches.
Friendswood entered that Freeman game averaging 56.7 points per game while allowing 13.2.
Angleton's rushing attack poses the biggest challenge the Mustangs have faced. The Wildcats beat Freeman 52-7 two weeks before Friendswood shut them out. Running back Jeremiah Reid ran for 181 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries in that game, averaging 30.2 yards per carry, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Through five games, the Wildcats' rushing attack averaged 323.5 yards per game, per The Facts. Senior quarterback Trey Gardner had completed 28 of 39 passes for 510 yards and seven touchdowns through four games, with no interceptions since Week 2. Senior running back Jayden Moore averaged 11.2 yards per carry with eight touchdowns on 30 carries through three games.
Angleton entered the week ranked No. 4 in Class 5A-DI by CW39. Friendswood was No. 10. Sports Illustrated slotted Angleton at No. 25 in its statewide top 25 as of Oct. 13.
Johnson is in his fourth year leading the Mustangs. He guided the team to the playoffs the past two seasons but never won more than five games in either year. This season has been different.
The loser Friday won't fall out of the playoff picture, but the stakes extend beyond district seeding. Friendswood has a bye the following week, then hosts No. 3-ranked Richmond Randle (7-0, 5-0) on Nov. 6 in the regular-season finale. A loss at Angleton would mean the Mustangs face Randle needing a win to avoid dropping to third in district.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday at Wildcat Stadium in Angleton.
