Nassau Bay residents can host block parties and cookouts on Tuesday, Oct. 6, as the city joins the nationwide National Night Out celebration from 5 to 8 p.m.

Nassau Bay police officers, emergency services personnel and city officials will visit each registered event location during the evening, according to the city's National Night Out page.

How to register

Neighbors who want to organize a block party need to sign up as block captains. Registration is available online through the city's website or in person at Nassau Bay City Hall, 1800 Space Park Drive, Suite 200.

The deadline is Thursday, Oct. 1.

Once registered, block captains can pick up yard signs from the Nassau Bay Police Department at the same address. The signs mark the party entrance so neighbors can find the gathering. City Hall is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for sign pickup. Signs must be returned to City Hall within three days after the event.

Background

National Night Out started in 1984 as a crime-prevention effort organized by the National Association of Town Watch. The first event drew about 2.5 million people across 400 communities in 23 states, the Branch Herald reported. Texas holds its celebration on the first Tuesday in October rather than the traditional August date used in most other states.

The City of Nassau Bay said in a Sept. 10 civic alert that the event brings police and neighbors together under positive circumstances and strengthens the sense of community.
