Clear Lake swept Clear Creek 25-23, 25-11, 25-21 on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Krueger Field House, climbing to third place in District 18-6A at the halfway mark.
The Falcons finished the first half of district play 4-3. Clear Creek dropped to 3-4, putting the Wildcats' 25-year playoff streak in danger heading into a brutal second-half stretch.
Morgan Regner led Clear Lake with 13 kills and 12 digs. Natalia Tibbetts ran the offense with 28 assists, and Natalie Herlambang anchored the back row with 21 digs and three aces. Abigail Vogelmeier added 11 kills, including the block that sealed the first set.
Clear Lake head coach CiCi Anderson said the stakes were clear before the match.
"It was a matter of one of us was going to be in third or fourth place, and one of us was going to be on the outs …" Anderson said. "I just put it out there."
Anderson added that her team respected the opponent. "You can never underestimate Clear Creek ever," she said. "So, we talked about following through with the game plan."
The Falcons built a 14-8 lead in the first set behind Landry Youngdahl's attack, but Clear Creek rallied to tie it 19-19. A Youngdahl kill and a Herlambang ace pushed Clear Lake ahead, and Vogelmeier closed it with a block, 25-23.
The second set was not close.
Clear Lake opened on an 8-1 run, with Vogelmeier recording three kills and a block in the stretch. Clear Creek never got closer than 13-10 and fell 25-11.
Clear Creek made one more push in the third set, tying it 16-16 on back-to-back kills from Harlie Wright. Vogelmeier answered with a run that pushed the lead to 19-16, and Charley Powell ended the match with a block for the 25-21 final.
Clear Lake carries 10 seniors on its 13-player varsity roster, and that experience showed Tuesday, as first reported by the Galveston County Daily News.
Clear Creek head coach Scott Simonds acknowledged the loss stings but said his team cannot dwell on it. After a five-set loss to Dickinson on Sept. 15, Simonds pointed to a prior season when the Wildcats started 3-4 through the first half and "found a way to finish 8-6 and win a playoff game," according to the Daily News. The Wildcats' playoff streak dates to 2001.
The path gets harder. Clear Creek opens the second half of district play at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at home against Clear Springs, the four-time defending district champion. Dickinson and Barbers Hill follow.
Clear Lake travels to Dickinson at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2.
