Friendswood High School could host a winner-take-all volleyball match Monday, Oct. 26, after Santa Fe's senior-night win over La Porte forced a tie for the last District 20-5A playoff spot.

Santa Fe beat La Porte 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 on Tuesday, Oct. 20, pulling both teams to 9-6 in district play, The Galveston County Daily News reported. The result locked the two squads into a dead heat for the fourth and final playoff seed.

If both teams win their regular-season finales Friday, Oct. 23, a play-in is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Friendswood. Santa Fe hosts South Houston (0-15 in district) at 4:30 p.m. Friday, while La Porte travels to Pasadena (3-12).

Caroline Doerre carried Santa Fe with 26 kills and 10 digs. Raylee Lawson added 42 assists, 13 digs and six kills, while Alexis Durant contributed seven kills, 17 digs and three aces.

"They knew the pressure was there, they knew they had to win, and they fought like heck to get out there to win that game," Santa Fe head coach Jennifer Webb told the Daily News.

Santa Fe had to grind for the win. La Porte took the second set 25-21 after erasing an 18-16 deficit with a 7-1 run. The Lady Indians answered in the third, turning a 12-10 hole into a 15-12 lead on five unanswered points. A 5-0 run that included three Doerre kills stretched the advantage to 22-14, and Santa Fe held on for the set. The fourth followed a similar pattern, with Santa Fe building a 22-17 cushion and fending off a late La Porte rally.

Webb said earlier this season that the playoff push has felt different. "In the past few years, it has been easy for us to get into the playoffs," she told the Daily News on Oct. 6, after a win over Texas City. "This year, we are definitely having to work for every point we score."

Santa Fe has made the playoffs 23 times since 2000 and entered this season with a five-year postseason streak, according to the Daily News.

Friendswood, which clinched its fourth consecutive District 20-5A title with a sweep of Ball High, has already locked up the top seed. The Lady Mustangs' 51-match district winning streak is the third-longest in program history, the Daily News reported.

Friday's finales come first. If Santa Fe and La Porte both take care of their opponents, the play-in lands at Friendswood's gym.
