Friendswood scored 71 points against Clear Brook in a lopsided rout Sept. 5 at Henry Winston Stadium. The Mustangs' defense held the Wolverines scoreless through three quarters in the 71-11 win.

Senior quarterback Josh Brister threw three touchdown passes, including a 53-yard strike and a 33-yard scoring toss to sophomore receiver Jackson Owens that pushed the lead to 50-3 in the third quarter. Friendswood had already piled up 21 points in the first quarter, according to the Galveston County Daily News.

The defense was just as dominant. Friendswood forced five turnovers, KGTX 7 reported, recording three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Linebacker Judson Stephens delivered one of the night's signature plays just before halftime, tackling Clear Brook running back Austin Cole in the end zone for a safety.

The win improved Friendswood to 2-0 after a 31-6 season-opening victory over Texas City on Aug. 28.

Owens has emerged as a reliable target for Brister through two games. After the Texas City win, head coach Jordan Johnson said the sophomore's big-play ability was no surprise, calling Owens "a young buck" who consistently makes those plays, according to the Galveston County Daily News. Owens backed up that confidence against Clear Brook, hauling in the 33-yard score from Brister as part of a third-quarter surge that blew the game open.

Looking ahead to district play, Johnson struck a measured tone after the blowout.

"One thing I told the guys about this game was, no matter what happened, what the outcome of this game was, it couldn't get us any closer to the playoffs; it couldn't get us any further away," Johnson said. "Once district starts, the feel changes in terms of finality and what games mean."

Friendswood opens District 11-5A-I play Friday, Sept. 11 against Victoria East in Victoria. The Titans enter that matchup at 0-1.
