Friendswood shut out Angleton 16-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to win the District 20-5A team tennis championship in a showdown of unbeaten teams.

The Mustangs, ranked fifth in Region III-5A, will host Dayton at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the bi-district round. Two other area programs also earned playoff berths on the same afternoon.

Friendswood dominates doubles, then singles

Friendswood head coach Dave Cook said his team shook off slow starts in doubles and found its rhythm quickly.

"Our kids played well after we got off to a few sluggish starts. We rallied well and closed out all of our doubles sets well," Cook said.

The mixed doubles pair of Sophia Barraza and Surya Alli helped Friendswood build a 7-0 lead before singles began. The Mustangs kept rolling. Preston Rigsby, Dalton Neumeyer, Nickolaus Hammerle and Saxon Ray all won boys singles. Alyssa Borda, Sophia Burkhalter, Cate Allan, Simran Virdi and Evelyn Sarafin swept the girls side.

Virdi clinched the decisive 10th point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over River Bradley at No. 4 girls singles. Sarafin matched that scoreline at No. 5, beating Rebecca Sartain. Rain halted the match before all singles could finish, but Friendswood had already claimed nine singles wins by then.

The Mustangs entered the fall as the defending 20-5A champions and last year's Region III-5A finalists, returning a deep roster of veterans including Rigsby, Neumeyer, Borda, Virdi, Burkhalter and Allan.

Clear Lake repeats as 18-6A champion

Clear Lake, ranked No. 11 in the state according to The Galveston County Daily News, defended its District 18-6A title with a 19-0 shutout of Clear Creek. The loss was the Wildcats' first and only in district play.

Clear Creek head coach Derick Geise said he knew his team was going in as the underdog against the Falcons but expressed pride in the Wildcats' runner-up finish in a competitive district.

Clear Falls also punched a playoff ticket, beating Deer Park 12-3 in a match interrupted by rain and a lights outage. Clear Falls head coach Patrick Marrie called it "a wild match." The Knights' boys swept both doubles and singles against Deer Park.

Also on Wednesday, Clear Brook closed its district season with a 14-5 win over Dickinson.
