A man accused of punching a transgender woman at the Clear Lake Davenport Lounge in 2021 now faces a hate crime enhancement after appearing in a Harris County court Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026.

Ryne Nelson was brought before a judge after a recent interaction with Galveston County law enforcement flagged his name in connection with the Harris County case. He is charged in the Aug. 7, 2021, assault on Kerry Chandler, a transgender woman who had performed in a drag show at the lounge earlier that evening, KHOU reported.

According to court documents, Nelson hit Chandler due to "bias and prejudice against a group identified by their gender." The prosecutor told the court Nelson admitted he struck Chandler and did so because she was transgender.

Surveillance video captured the encounter. The prosecutor described Nelson walking onto the patio, returning inside, and punching Chandler with a single blow after she extended her hand, knocking her to the ground. Chandler suffered concussions and swelling to the side of her face, the prosecutor said.

Federal agents investigated at the time but did not file charges. The Harris County District Attorney's Office credited Chandler's family with tracking down the surveillance footage and other evidence that helped identify Nelson. A Harris County grand jury indicted him in 2023.

Defense claims self-defense

Nelson's defense attorney, who appeared virtually, argued Chandler grabbed Nelson first. "Which caused him to react. It wasn't a hate crime. Basically, it was a crime of self-defense," the attorney said.

The judge imposed multiple bond conditions, including barring Nelson from any LGBTQ-accommodating establishment.

If convicted on the hate crime enhancement, Nelson could face an additional 180 days in jail on top of any sentence for the underlying charge. The DA's office said hate crimes are up in Harris County but did not provide specific statistics.

Nelson is scheduled to return to court Oct. 13, 2026.
