The University of Houston-Clear Lake enrolled more than 1,500 new undergraduates for Fall 2026, including a freshman class that grew 17% over the previous year.

The figures, released Thursday, Sept. 3, on the university's Official Reporting Day, mark one of the largest freshman cohorts in UHCL's history. Transfer enrollment climbed 7.5%, producing the biggest incoming transfer class since 2021. For the Clear Lake area's flagship university and one of the region's largest employers, the numbers signal renewed momentum after years of relatively flat headcounts.

"The growth of our freshman and transfer student populations reflects increasing confidence in UHCL and the education we provide," UHCL President Richard Walker said in a university statement.

Overall headcount held relatively steady at more than 7,900 students. But semester credit hours, which measure total coursework load, rose for the second consecutive fall. Students are collectively taking more classes even though total enrollment stayed flat.

Ann Theodori, vice president for strategic enrollment management, attributed the gains to earlier outreach, a simpler enrollment process and stronger partnerships with feeder institutions. She said the growth includes students entering through different pathways, whether starting college at UHCL or transferring in to finish a degree.

The university has been expanding access on several fronts. On Aug. 27, UHCL launched its first Guaranteed Admission partnership with Dickinson ISD, a deal that could benefit roughly 515 seniors by creating a direct pathway beginning with Fall 2027 applicants. At the signing ceremony, Walker said the partnership is about "helping remove uncertainty from that journey" for students and families.

UHCL also plans to raise the family income cap for its Hawk Promise tuition-support program from $65,000 to $100,000 in adjusted gross income starting with the Fall 2027 cycle, according to a separate university announcement. The program covers tuition and mandatory fees for qualifying Texas students.

The university, part of the University of Houston System, ranks 11th on the 2026 Best Value Colleges in Texas list compiled by Niche. In-state annual cost of attendance sits at $10,018, and UHCL awarded more than $26.6 million in financial aid in 2025, according to university data.

Both the expanded Hawk Promise income threshold and the Dickinson ISD Guaranteed Admission program take effect for Fall 2027 applicants.
