Nassau Bay's Parks and Recreation Committee will take up a full agenda on Aug. 19, including safety fixes at the Founders Park kayak ramp and plans for a fall dedication ceremony at Apollo Dog Park.
The joint meeting with Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 1800 Space Park Drive, Suite 200. It is in-person only, according to the posted agenda.
Kayak ramp and floating dock
The kayak ramp at Founders Park is up for discussion after the surface became slippery from fish guts, creating a safety concern. The committee will consider adding a gripping surface.
A separate floating dock project remains on hold.
Apollo Dog Park
Two items involve the dog park: an update on removing old green benches and planning for a fall dedication ceremony. The committee will also discuss updating a QR code at the park and setting a dedication date.
Courts, exercise equipment and entrance signs
Tennis court work includes wind screen maintenance, a blue-paint update on the practice area and a sunshade delivery update. Pickleball courts will get a discussion on whether lights and benches are needed; wind screens have already been installed.
At David Braun Park, adult exercise equipment is targeted for completion by mid-August. Team leads Michelle Barecky, Lara Forde and Jacob Forde oversee that park.
Under Keep Nassau Bay Beautiful business, the committee will discuss replacing Nassau Bay's entrance signs after the existing brick walls began decomposing at the front and back.
Budget and programming
Committee members have been asked to submit ideas for the FY2027 budget, covering city-wide and park improvements. The committee joined five other advisory boards for a budget workshop earlier this month.
Programming proposals include a meditation and yoga series at Founders Park, with 10 sessions requested for the 2027 budget, and a possible Bay Area Symphony brass quintet performance. No date or venue has been confirmed for the performance.
The committee is also working with Smash Design on an Astronaut Statues project and continuing development of a First Responder's Garden on Leeward.
How to participate
Residents, property owners and business owners within Nassau Bay may address the committee during a Citizens' Request for Hearing segment. Speakers are limited to three minutes and may not yield time to another person.
City Hall is wheelchair accessible. Residents needing auxiliary aids should contact the City Secretary's Office at 281-336-4211 at least two working days before the meeting.
Chairman Nancee Lynn, who also serves as Swan Lagoon Park team lead, will open the meeting with a committee award. Mike Barrett leads the Founders Park team, and Michelle Weller oversees Howard Ward Park.
