A man was struck and killed Saturday, Sept. 26, while walking in lanes of northbound Interstate 45 near Baybrook Mall in Webster, Houston police said.

Houston Police Department Clear Lake Division officers responded around 9:11 p.m. after callers reported a man walking in multiple lanes of traffic on the Gulf Freeway near El Dorado Boulevard, KPRC 2 first reported. Officers at the scene said the man appeared to have been hit multiple times. Houston Fire Department personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police have not released the man's name.

An SUV involved in the initial collision remained at the scene. The driver told investigators they had consumed one alcoholic beverage around 5 p.m., according to HPD. The department's DWI unit cleared the driver, and no charges are pending.

HPD Sgt. Yasin told KPRC 2 that dispatchers had received two calls earlier that evening about a man possibly experiencing a mental health crisis at a nearby shopping center. "Earlier in the evening, dispatchers received two calls about a man possibly experiencing a mental health crisis at a nearby shopping center, near Dave's Hot Chicken and a pizzeria," Yasin said. Police believe those calls may have involved the same man later struck on the freeway, though that connection has not been confirmed.

HPD's investigation is ongoing.
